Futur Montréal commits to Cavendish extension: a clear plan to end decades of delays

Montreal, October 6, 2025 - Today, at the conference organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Laurent–Mont-Royal (CCSL-MR) and the Chamber of Commerce of Montreal Centre Sud-Ouest (CCCSOM), Futur Montréal made a firm and irreversible commitment to advance the long-awaited Cavendish extension project, one of the party's top priorities to improve connectivity and foster the development of the future Namur–Hippodrome eco-district. "The Cavendish extension project has been in the works since the 60s; we have to stop going around in circles," said Jean-François Kacou, leader of Futur Montréal. "Futur Montréal is determined to move this project forward and will not tolerate any excuses for its slowdown." The Cavendish Avenue extension project aims to connect the north and south sections to improve mobility, reduce congestion on key roads like Décarie Boulevard, and finally provide adequate access to neighboring neighborhoods. It also constitutes a central element of the development plan for the Namur–Hippodrome sector, where the lack of a coherent road link is hampering sustainable urban growth. Despite years of studies and consultations, the project remains stuck at the planning stage. Futur Montréal believes it is time to act.

Futur Montréal presents a clear and concrete action plan to move the Cavendish extension forward:
  1. Strong political and administrative will – The political will is already there. Futur Montréal will reallocate budgets currently allocated to the Jean-Talon tramway study to focus on the concrete implementation of the Cavendish extension project. This project will become the top priority.
  2. A solid and flexible financial strategy – If the City of Montreal cannot assume the financial burden alone, Futur Montréal will mobilize its Public-Private Housing and Infrastructure Fund to attract private investors willing to contribute to the project's completion.
  3. An agile workforce and effective coordination – In collaboration with neighboring municipalities, Futur Montréal will establish a solid governance structure to launch work within the first two years of its mandate. The new section will include three lanes: one lane reserved for buses, taxis, and shared vehicles, and two lanes for private and heavy vehicles. No bike lanes will be built on this section.

Gulnar Mousa, candidate for mayor of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce for Futur Montréal, said: “Following the conference held this morning by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Laurent–Mont-Royal, which our leader Jean-François Kacou attended, I would like to express my full support for their commitment to the Cavendish extension. This project is vital, and it is time to move from rhetoric to action. As a candidate for mayor of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, I fully support the completion of the Cavendish extension as part of a comprehensive plan to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and strengthen ties between our borough and neighboring communities.” “Futur Montréal will make no excuses,” added Jean-François Kacou. “We are not asking for permission; we are creating the will to act.” The Cavendish extension is more than a project: it is a promise of urban reconnection and community vitality. Futur Montréal will deliver on this promise without delay or hesitation. »About Futur Montréal
