Futur Montréal launches its “Commerce & Access First” policy to end bike path chaos and restore balance to Montreal’s streets
Montreal, QC, September 8, 2025 – Futur Montréal has unveiled a bold new policy to end the chaos created by poorly planned bike lanes. With its Trade & Access First Policy, the party is committed to rethinking, redirecting or restricting roads that block access to local businesses, reduce vital parking and stifle local commerce on Montreal's main arteries."Our small businesses are the heart of Montreal's economy. Many have been family-owned for generations, and today they are penalized by an administration that refuses to think outside the box. When a bike path drives away customers, blocks deliveries, or cuts off access to merchants, it makes no sense, and Futur Montréal will correct the situation." said Jean-François Kacou, head of Futur Montréal. “We won't remove cycling from the city, but we will ensure it is integrated where it works for everyone, not where it destroys livelihoods.”Kacou added: “It’s about balance. We want a Montreal where cyclists, motorists, families, and businesses share the city without conflict.
Our plan brings back common sense and puts the interests of local communities before political vanity projects.”
Main elements of the policy
Permanent freeze in commercial arteries
Futur Montréal will impose a permanent freeze on the construction of new bike lanes on commercial arteries. These vital economic axes must remain accessible for deliveries, parking, ride-sharing services, and local activity. Bike lanes will instead be directed to safer residential streets, green corridors, and parks. Targeted investments in safety
Before building new infrastructure, Futur Montréal will prioritize investments to make the existing network safer: better lighting, clear separation from automobile traffic, reinforced signage and safer intersections.
Limited and intelligent expansion
The development of new lanes will be limited to areas where they truly improve safety or complement residential routes. Each project will be based on data, consultations, and neighborhood realities, not ideology. A balanced future for mobility The Futur Montréal plan freezes harmful bike lane expansion, improves the safety of the existing network, and ensures that urban planning meets real needs. The approach is based on a simple principle: mobility for all Montrealers, without penalizing those who keep the city moving.
